I pitched, produced and wrote this report on Howard University's Showtime Marching Band as part of the PBS NewsHour's Inauguration coverage. The marching band had been selected to perform in the inaugural parade in January 2009 and I spoke to them about their decision to apply and their preparation for the big event. Interviewing the band directors and members of the band, they reflected on what it meant to march in President Barack Obama's inaugural parade. We produced the story in the low, low January 2009 temperatures as the band soldiered through late-night rehearsals in preparation for its march along Pennsylvania Avenue. This was one of my first reports -- and still my very favorite.
